| June 2: I got a late-night call
that the Grateful Dead community lost another of its precious
family.
Vince Welnick went to a better place on June 2. It is said that
he took his own life. He openly discussed his demons, but he
possessed a unique creative motivation, and I was touched by
his musical talent. I was privileged to perform with him and
produce some of his work. Vince always reminded me that I had
been the first person to interview him when he joined the Grateful
Dead, which seemed to hold a special place for him. (For me,
too.)
Vince was particularly affected when Jerry Garcia died. He never
seemed able to accept that great loss. He talked openly about
the depression he suffered as a result of it.
I last saw Vince in Tampa, Florida at Skippers. He was touring
with Gent Treadly, and an encouraging number of Deadheads came
out to the show. It was good to see him. We talked about working
together again, but time slips by and tomorrow is a very speculative
word.
Fare thee well, Vince. Tell Jerry we all say hello!
Standing on the moon with nothing left to do
A lovely view of heaven, but I'd rather be with you....
