Nashville-Nobody knew better than Waylon Jennings about the road "harder" traveled--one that is paved with uncertain dreams and driven by a fire in the soul that can't be put out.  It is the price paid for the luxury of true self-expression, untainted and unyielding.  He once said, " I think you need to play your music and do the best you can with that, and that's what you will be remembered for."  The grassroots musicians of the Texas/Oklahoma music scene delivered a shining example of that philosophy when they gathered on September 19th and 20th at Saengerhalle in New Bruanfels, Texas for "The Red River Tribute" to Waylon Jennings. This two-day live recorded concert hauntingly captured the lasting spirit of Jennings' music and influence through two dozen music soldiers who unleashed the kind of heartfelt performances that is verbally very difficult to express.

Though the Texas skies seemed to understand our loss, the all day rain did not present a problem for the whirlwind of music junkies that filled the venue for a one-time chance to witness the extreme line up. But more powerful than the caliber of artists that crossed the weekend stage was the tremendous wave of vitality flowing through the room.  It was an energy that could have set the place on fire.  Though each and every performance was powerful, there was a certain change in the air as Jessie Colter Jennings's took the stage.  She was radiant, almost illuminated in peace and love as she sat at her piano.  There were many great things said on the mic those two days, but something Jessie said made quite an impact.  "I know tonight that Waylon knows about this and he loves this because this is what is going to change music.  If you will all require the real thing it will change music.  So hang tough. You guys down here in Texas are doing it right." The roar from the crowd was deafening.  What ever that feeling was that swept over everyone in the room it was unified and understood.

Each band/artist furnished a 45 minute set including a version of their favorite Jennings tune adding up to 17 hours of live recorded music by the event's end.  As the entire production was organized and brought to you by Cross Canadian Ragweed, so too is the double live CD that will selectively feature each "tribute" song by (just to name a few) Ragweed, Billy Joe Shaver, Jason Boland and The Stragglers, The Mike McClure Band, Wade Bowen and West 84, Blue Edmondson, Cooder Graw, Susan Gibson, Jerry Jeff Walker and son Django, "Shooter" (Waylon Jr.), and Jessie Colter Jennings accompanied by renowned producer Don Was on bass. "The Red River Tribute" is slated for release by the end of the year on Underground Sound Records.  Keep checking the band's web site at http://www.crosscanadianragweed.com for release information. As all proceeds from the album as well as the event are going to the Diabetes Foundation, please check it out.
