Nashville-"Being in this genre of music you
almost have to be influenced in someway by Waylon Jennings."
These are the opening comments from Cody Canada, lead man for grass
roots rockers, Cross Canadian Ragweed, in a letter to fans, peers,
and media friends. Canada is the brainchild behind "Waylon
Jennings: The Red River Tribute" named after the waterway that
stands both as a divider between the Texas and Oklahoma borders and
a bridge between the music that thrives on either side, a brand of
music that over the past few years has spread nationwide. At
this very special event, a colossal group of music lovers will come
together in loving memory of the legendary Waylon Jennings for a
two-day concert that will feature a whirlwind sampling of some of
the best musicians Texas/Oklahoma has to offer. Each of the 30
bands/artists will pay personal tribute to the legend by performing
their favorite Jennings' tune in back to back performances.
"The Red River Tribute" will happen on Friday, September
19th
and Saturday, September 20th at Saengerhalle in New Braunfels,
Texas. (35 minutes south of Austin) Doors open at 9:00 AM.
Tickets are $45 for a day pass and $80 for a two-day pass. www.waylontribute.com
For all of you who have heard the myths and legends about the
underground music gypsies circulating the Midwest, leaving their
lyrical phantasm on the lips of the masses and their name hanging on
the grapevine, this will be a one time chance to witness the joining
of those musical forces, all in one location, all on one stage, all
in one name. The concert will be recorded and
transformed into a double "live" CD and released
nationally. The album is slated for a Christmas release.
The coming together of this event was easier than Canada had
expected. 15 bands immediately escalated to 30 as the word got
out around the scene. Lee Ann Womack, Billy Joe Shaver, Jason Boland
and The Stragglers, Cooder Graw, Travis Linville, Ray Wylie Hubbard,
Mike McClure Band, and a slew of others jumped at the chance to get
involved solely for the musical experience. Canada explains in his
letter that the band was hit hard by the loss of Jennings, Diabetes
being the culprit. "Diabetes is what took Waylon from us, so
lets give all the proceeds to diabetes, from the ticket sells to the
shirts, to the food, and to the CD itself." And that is
just what they will do. Saengerhalle was selected as the concert
destination, an old German establishment acclaimed for having a
sound and vibe unlike any other music venue around, and in Canada's
opinion, the perfect place for such an event. Make no mistake
about it, an undertaking of this magnitude happens only once in a
blue moon, and the effect will be something impossible to replicate.
On behalf of Cross Canadian Ragweed, we invite you to be in
attendance.
"There is no way that I would miss
this opportunity to be part of such an awesome event, benefiting
such a great cause, honoring a truly great man, alongside of an
amazing group of talented performers and musicians."
Lee Ann Womack
"Shooter brought CCR to Nashville to
play at Waylon's memorial in March 2002. I fell in love with
their powerful originality. Waylon would be proud of the Red
River project and I am inspired to be a part of it."
Jessie Colter Jennings
"I'm very excited to be a part of this
with so many good friends and talent. The Texas audience was a
pivotal part of Waylon's career so it feels right to celebrate his
legacy there."
