MUSICAL JOURNEYS -- A LOOK BACK

Interviews and features spanning 25 years of music journalism by Toni Brown

Where Have All The Deadheads Gone?
This article originally appeared as a cover story in Relix magazine, Volume 24 #5 (October, 1997)

Archaeologists have long searched Greece for the true story surrounding the statue of the Colossus at Rhodes, which allegedly greeted ships at the entrance to the city's harbor. But it has been virtually impossible to figure out how such a large structure was erected. Historians have spent eons trying to uncover such mysteries.

JAM ‘TIL DAWN*  by Toni Brown

  >> It’s been a long time since I’ve had the opportunity to write about music. Over three years, in fact! If you’ve ever heard of Relix, you’ll know me as the long-time publisher of the premiere magazine on the Deadhead scene. We were also the launching point for following generations of Jambands. Phish, Blues Traveler, Widespread Panic, Leftover Salmon, String Cheese Incident, Dark Star Orchestra, Govt Mule and so many others got their first international media exposure through our pages.

AIRPLAY 101, By Bryan Farrish
How Retail and Radio Work Together

>>Although we recommend that a new label get their radio and gigs going first (so they can sell their CDs at the gigs), if the label gets to where it has at least four or five acts, and EACH one is
charting in their respective airplay chart, and is doing 100+ gigs per year, and is getting 50+ articles/reviews per year, then it MIGHT be time to consider real retail promotion and distribution.

One Fret in the Grave  by Stephen Wrench

  >>Southern Rock. When it was created there was only one genre it was called rock, there were no sub genres like alternative rock, modern rock , triple aaa, easy listening, folk, adult contemporary, pop. Inthe 70's when southern rock was born and bred all the above genres could be heard on 1 station the local rock station.

SYNDICATION 101 By Bryan Farrish,
Investors, part 1

>>Starting a syndicated show is a very expensive proposition (more expensive than buying a house).  Thus, most people need to use funds other than their own. The first place too look for funds is obvious... your current listeners.  Using your mailing list that you've already gathered, send a note to them (along with your regular mailing-list info) mentioning that you are "making plans for your next phase of growth... interested parties contact me."

>>Now we'll cover what questions potential investors will ask when they are considering investing in your radio syndication campaign, along with your answers to them...

TRADE SUPPORT

>>One of the ancillary areas of radio-marketing is called trade-support. Trade support is where you "support" the trade magazines / newspapers / websites that pertain to your business, by buying ads in them. In radio syndication, your basic trades are Talkers, R&R, Radio Ink, Small Market Radio Newsletter, CMJ, Chart, Billboard, Mouth, Ad Week, Advertising Age, All Access, Inside Radio, Radio Business Report, Radio World, and The Current.
