Mule
The Deepest End
(ATO)
Wow, what an awesome package for any mule fan. Taken
from the all star concert held on May 3rd, 2003 in New
Orleans at the Saenger Theatre, The Deepest End includes
two CDs and a DVD, all in one package, and not a slow
spot in the set. Combined time between the CDs and
the DVD is 6 hours, 4 minutes. Like I said before, wow.
The closing chapter to what has been a two year tribute
to the memory of the Mules founding bassist, Allen
Woody, The Deepest End features an A list of
guest jammers, including bass players from Jack Casady
to Deep Purples Roger Glover, from Ozzy sideman Jason
Newsted to Flecktone Victor Vooten and the wickedly
funky Primus thumper, Les Claypool.
And it doesnt even begin to end with the bass - guest
players also include horn man Karl Denson, Bela Fleck,
Ivan Neville, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band and many more.
Now, dont think the DVD and the CDs feature the
same songs. Very few performances appear on both the CD
and the DVD.
DVD highlights include - well, the entire DVD, how about
that? Some of the coolest moments include= Karl Denson
adding a wailing tenor sax to Blind Man In The
Dark; Lay Of The Sunflower, with Rob Wasserman
on bass, Danny Louis on keys, and Bela Fleck on banjo.
John The Revelator with The Dirty Dozen Brass
Band; Beautifully Broken one of several tunes to
feature the hard working Meters bassist. George
Porter, Jr. (to see just how hard working Porter is,
view the bonus behind the scenes video) a bang up of
Deep Purples Maybe Im A Leo, with Roger
Glover on bass; Jack Casady re-creating the bass line he
laid down on the Hendrix Electric Ladyland LP,
Voodoo Chile; Los Lobos cats David Hidalgo and
Conrad
Lozano with the Mule doing it up on the Creme classic,
Politician. Black Sabbaths Sweet Leaf and
War Pigs, back to back. Les Claypool on
Greasy Grannys Gopher Gravy; a totally
unplanned Warren solo rendition of The Eagles Wasted
Time; and the show stopping 3-bass player version of
Thorazine Shuffle.
See why I used the word wow?
Audio highlights run rampant as well.
Game Face; Patchwork Quilt, with Bela and
Victor; yet another Deep Purple (originally Freddie
King) tune, GoinDown with Roger Glover; and
Soulshine with Widespread Panics Dave Schools.
Wow. A massive, ass kicking mule if ever there was one.
Woody has just got to be grinning his ass off.
