'Moonshine
Mountain Boys', self titled, Bootlick Records, 2004
'A double shot of whiskey and a chaser full of rock
and roll. The boys sum up this CD in one line, but I
still have to write this review, y'all.
It goes down mighty easy. The opening cut sets the
mood with 'Better by the Beer, a tribute that
includes lines like 'even with my wife here, she looks
(repeat title). The music sounds familiar, but when
you go down to y our local bar for your brand of
moonshine, that's just what you expect.
Actually, the upbeat version of Merle Travis's 'Sixteen
Tons might surprise you. This version is a rocker that
puts new life into a song that you might not expect to
be revived.
'(9/11) The Day I Learned to Sing the Blues is even more
unusual, combining memories of injustice to
African-Americans with regrets about 9/11, inthree-and-a-half
minutes.
'Tired is the chaser of rock and roll that the boys
promised and they deliver. 'One More Road mixes rock and
Country, with a rock beat that adds a banjo to the mix
in a four and a half minute suite.
'Carolina Blue even adds a little jazz in a reflective
song about a romantic breakup.
If this is what moonshine is like, I'll take another
shot.
