Nineteen88
The Great American Rock and Roll Spectacle (Select Records)
Stephen
Centanni
These outlaw metal rockers are really showing
their redneck roots with “The Great American Rock and
Roll Spectacle.” From vocalist/guitarist Handsome Mick
Rowe’s raspy, grimy vocals to Eric “Butter”
Lee’s bass thumps and Ryan “Hog” McCain’s
skin pounds. Nineteen88 harkens back to the eighties metal sound
when rock based its foundation in sex and drugs (where it belongs).
The music on Nineteen88’s release belongs in the arena
in front of thousands. A perfect example of this would be the
song “Pedal to the Metal.” Repetitive, distorted
guitar riffs are backed by lyrics paying homage to the live
rock experience. Nineteen88 also doesn’t mind not taking
themselves too seriously, and the proof is found with the song
“The Metal Pokey.” This song introduces the listener
to a warped version of this children’s song. It makes
me wonder what the crowd looks like during a live performance
of this one. If you’re a fan of the days of arena rock,
slutty chicks with high hair, and guys in spandex pants, then
this one is for you.
