The Burning Effigies
CD - Pipe Dream
CD Baby says that “the band can found in some of Dublin's
seedier clubs”, but it is hard to imagine how songs this
sophisticated could work there.
The Burning Effigies have a pop sound that varies from track
to track. Partly this is because they used a variety of equipment
to record it since beginning the CD in 2003. It starts out with
the orchestral sounding “On The Way” and there are
a few pop tunes before they get funky with “Plug and Play”.
“Get Down With Me” sounds like a modern version
of the Beatles. Throughout there is a great mix of easygoing
pop with a beat, with soft vocals.
There are plenty of interesting lyrics. “Village of the
Damned” has “the women scowl as they push their
prams around/the men tell stories of former glories.”
Strangely enough, even this song maintains the CD’s up-tempo
vibe, in the melody if not the lyrics.
This is all done with electric guitar, bass, and drums, with
occasional sixties-style organ added in.
Great, upbeat music on this debut CD.
