Defiance, an atmospheric hard rock album, featuring Ken Steiger and special guests Derek Sherinian, Virgil Donati, Gary Hoey, and Tony Franklin, showcases the awesome power and effect of the guitar. Tracks one and two, Prince of Souls and Rock-It, are gritty, hard edged rock, the defining sound on this eleven track album. However, Project Steiger allows for some diversity with Run 4 Cover and Neutron Flux, which both begin slow and moody, then descend into hard rock territory.

In an interview with Metal Exiles.com, Ken Steiger listed Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, Queensryche, Megadeth, Judas Priest, King Diamond, Iron Maiden as influences, and the impressions these artists have made on Steiger are evident in Defiance. Later in the interview, Steiger describes the instrumental music on the album as “Instra-METAL” and states the songs are “compositions in the truest form.” One doesn’t get the sense while listening to Defiance that Steiger and company have just gotten together to jam, as each composition is carefully balanced, either a straight shot into heart pumping metal or a slow burn to a raucous hard rock explosion.
